Supporting Children with ADHD - A Guide for Parents and Teachers

2025-11-20

Persistent learning challenges, underperformance in school, behavioral issues, low mood, and anxiety may not simply be a phase, but they could be signs of ADHD or (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder).

ADHD involves more than just inattention and hyperactivity. It brings a series of other challenges that parents and teachers need to recognize. Signs of ADHD can be observed in young children as early as age 4 and become more apparent when entering kindergarten and primary school.

It's important to note that not all children with ADHD are hyperactive. Many are quite intelligent, but their inability to focus for long periods of time, combined with impulsivity and sometimes poor working memory, prevent their learning. This can lead to poor academic performance, and over time may result in emotional issues such as self-doubt, low self-esteem, and feelings of isolation. Children with ADHD are more prone to develop anxiety, depression, and at times being perceived as "troublemakers" in the classroom.

Unlocking the Potential in children with ADHD, with Executive Function (EF) Skills training

Most children with ADHD, learning difficulties, Dyslexia and Autism struggle with Executive Function (EF) skills. Think of Executive Function as the brain's management system—it's responsible for planning, focusing, remembering instructions, and doing multiple tasks.

The good news is that while children are not born with these skills, they can be taught. EF skills training acts like a mental gym, improving cognitive capacity in areas where children with ADHD need the most support.

Executive Function skills are very important number of skills needed for children to succeed in their academic skills, emotional wellbeing and their relationship with others.

EF skills training can help children with ADHD to improve in the following areas:

a. Focus & Attention

b. Working Memory

c. Cognitive or Thinking Flexibility

d. Organization

e. Time Management

f. Self-Regulation

g. Task Initiation & Completion-

These two skills, are essential for children with ADHD and other special needs when learning new subjects or completing classroom assignments.

Task initiation- is the ability to begin an assignment, resist distractions and impulses, and keep their focus on the task.

Task completion- requires strong cognitive processing, working memory, and mental flexibility for children to finish their assignment.

h. Emotional Regulation

i. Self-Control
j. Response Inhibition (Controlling their impulses)
